Yellow stains on mattresses and pillows are usually caused by sweat, body oils, saliva, skin products, and natural aging of fabrics. You can often improve their appearance without bleach by using gentler cleaning methods.
Method 1: Baking soda + hydrogen peroxide (for whitening and deodorizing)
You’ll need:
- 1 cup (240 mL) 3% hydrogen peroxide
- 3 tablespoons baking soda
- A few drops of mild dish soap
Steps:
- Mix the ingredients in a spray bottle or bowl.
- Lightly apply to yellowed areas (do not soak the mattress).
- Let it sit for 30–60 minutes.
- Blot with a clean damp cloth.
- Sprinkle baking soda over the area and leave it for several hours (or overnight).
- Vacuum thoroughly.
Note: Test on a hidden area first, especially with colored fabrics.
Method 2: Vinegar solution (for odors and light stains)
Mix:
- 1 part white vinegar
- 2 parts water
Lightly spray the surface, let it sit briefly, then blot dry. Avoid oversaturating mattresses, as moisture trapped inside can encourage mold.
For yellowed pillows
- Check the care label first.
- Many washable pillows can be machine washed:
- Use warm water (if allowed).
- Add regular detergent plus ½ cup baking soda.
- Run an extra rinse cycle.
- Dry completely (important to prevent mildew).
