These Visible Signs May Be Hiding Liver Disease

The liver performs hundreds of important functions, including processing nutrients, filtering toxins, making proteins, and helping regulate blood clotting. Because liver problems can develop gradually, some warning signs may appear on the skin, eyes, or body before a person feels seriously ill.

These signs do not always mean liver disease, but persistent or unexplained changes should be discussed with a healthcare professional.

1. Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)

A yellow tint to the whites of the eyes or skin can occur when bilirubin builds up in the blood. This may happen when the liver is not processing bilirubin properly.

2. Easy bruising or bleeding

The liver produces proteins needed for normal blood clotting. Liver problems can sometimes lead to easier bruising or prolonged bleeding.

3. Itchy skin

Persistent itching, especially without an obvious rash, can occur in some liver conditions due to changes in bile flow.

4. Swelling in the abdomen or legs

Fluid buildup can cause:

  • A swollen abdomen (ascites)
  • Swelling in the feet or ankles (edema)

5. Spider-like blood vessels on the skin

Small, red, spider-shaped blood vessels (often called spider angiomas) may appear on the face, neck, chest, or arms in some people with liver disease.

6. Red palms

Some liver conditions are associated with redness of the palms (palmar erythema), though this can also occur for other reasons.

7. Dark urine or pale stools

Changes in bile processing can sometimes cause:

  • Urine that appears darker than usual
  • Stools that are unusually pale or clay-colored

8. Fatigue and weakness

Ongoing tiredness, low energy, or reduced stamina can occur with liver problems, although these symptoms have many possible causes.

9. Confusion or changes in mental function

In advanced liver disease, buildup of toxins can affect the brain, causing confusion, sleep changes, or difficulty concentrating.

10. Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite

A reduced appetite, nausea, or unintended weight loss can occur in some liver condition
