What Is The Normal Blood Pressure For Each Age

What Is the Normal Blood Pressure for Each Age?

Blood pressure does not have one “perfect” number for every age. In general, healthy blood pressure goals are similar for most adults, but doctors may individualize targets based on overall health, medications, and medical conditions.

Blood pressure is written as systolic/diastolic:

  • Systolic (top number): pressure when the heart beats
  • Diastolic (bottom number): pressure when the heart relaxes

General Blood Pressure Ranges by Age

Age Group Common Healthy Range (Approximate)
Children Varies greatly by age, height, and sex
Teens (13–17) Around <120/80 mmHg
Adults (18–59) Around <120/80 mmHg
Older adults (60–79) Often targeted around <130/80 mmHg for many people, depending on health status
Adults 80+ Targets may be individualized; many aim for safe control while avoiding dizziness and falls

Blood Pressure Categories for Adults

  • Normal: Less than 120/80 mmHg
  • Elevated: 120–129 systolic and less than 80 diastolic
  • High blood pressure (Stage 1): 130–139 systolic or 80–89 diastolic
  • High blood pressure (Stage 2): 140 or higher systolic or 90 or higher diastolic
  • Very high: Around 180/120 or higher requires urgent medical attention, especially with symptoms

For People Over 65

A slightly higher reading is not automatically dangerous, especially if a person is otherwise healthy. Doctors often consider:

  • Risk of falls from blood pressure dropping too low
  • Other illnesses
  • Medications
  • Kidney and heart health
  • Overall fitness and independence
