How to Wash Yellowed Pillows: 3 Tips to Keep Them White and Fresh
Over time, pillows can turn yellow because of sweat, body oils, skin products, moisture, and dust buildup. The good news is that many washable pillows can be refreshed with the right cleaning method.
1. Check the Pillow Label First
Before washing, look at the care instructions.
- Machine-washable pillows: Many polyester and some down or feather pillows can be washed.
- Memory foam pillows: Usually should not be placed in a washing machine because water can damage the foam. The cover may be washable instead.
Remove pillowcases and protectors, then inspect for tears or damage before cleaning.
2. Use a Deep-Clean Washing Method
For washable pillows:
- Wash two pillows at a time to keep the machine balanced.
- Use warm water (if the label allows).
- Add a normal amount of detergent.
- For stubborn yellowing, some people add a small amount of oxygen-based bleach (color-safe bleach) according to the product instructions.
After washing:
- Run an extra rinse cycle to remove detergent residue.
- Make sure pillows are completely dry to prevent mildew.
3. Dry Them Thoroughly and Maintain Them
Drying is one of the most important steps.
- Use a dryer setting recommended on the care label.
- Add dryer balls or clean tennis balls to help fluff pillows (if suitable for the pillow type).
- Stop occasionally to check that the inside is drying evenly.
To keep pillows looking fresher longer:
- Use washable pillow protectors.
- Wash pillowcases regularly.
- Allow pillows to air out occasionally.
- Avoid going to bed with wet hair, which can add moisture
