4 Benefits of Putting Vick Vaporub on Your Feet Before Bed

If you’re referring to the viral “Vicks VapoRub on your feet before bed” trick, there are plenty of claims online, but most of the supposed benefits aren’t supported by good scientific evidence.

🦶 What might actually happen?

1. It may moisturize dry feet
Vicks VapoRub contains ingredients in a petrolatum-based ointment, so applying it to dry, cracked skin may help soften and moisturize the feet.

2. It may make feet feel cool or warm
Menthol and other aromatic ingredients can create a cooling or warming sensation. This is a sensory effect, not evidence that it is treating an underlying illness.

3. It may temporarily soothe minor muscle discomfort
The product is labeled for temporary relief of minor aches and pains when applied to the skin, although applying it specifically to the feet isn’t a proven treatment for nighttime leg problems.

4. It may make your feet smell strongly of menthol
That’s about as far as the evidence goes for many viral claims. There is no good evidence that putting Vicks on the soles of the feet cures a cough, cold, fever, or congestion. The manufacturer’s directions recommend using it on the chest and throat for cough, rather than the feet. (vicks.com)

⚠️ Important precautions

Don’t put VapoRub inside the nose, in the mouth, or on broken/damaged skin. It is intended for external use. Keep it away from children who might accidentally ingest it. (poison.org)

Bottom line: Using Vicks on intact skin of the feet may moisturize them and provide a pleasant menthol sensation, but claims that it “draws toxins out,” stops a cough, or cures infections through the feet aren’t scientifically established.
