Vitamin D: 4 Warning Signs of Taking Too Much
Vitamin D is important for health, but taking excessive amounts—usually from supplements—can cause vitamin D toxicity and dangerously high calcium levels.
1. Nausea or Vomiting
Persistent nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite can occur when vitamin D levels become excessively high.
2. Extreme Thirst or Frequent Urination
Excess vitamin D can raise calcium levels, which may cause unusual thirst and increased urination.
3. Muscle Weakness or Confusion
Unusual weakness, fatigue, or confusion can be warning signs of excessive vitamin D intake.
4. Kidney Stones or Severe Pain
Very high vitamin D levels can contribute to kidney stones and, in severe cases, kidney damage.
Important: These symptoms can have many other causes, so they do not automatically mean you have vitamin D toxicity. If you take high-dose vitamin D and develop these symptoms, contact a healthcare professional promptly rather than changing prescribed treatment on your own.
For most adults, the general upper intake limit is 4,000 IU (100 mcg) per day from all sources, although doctors may prescribe higher doses temporarily to treat deficiency.
More vitamin D is not always better—use supplements at the dose recommended for you.
