If Your Hands “Fall Asleep,” Here’s What It May Mean
That pins-and-needles feeling or temporary numbness in your hands is common and does not automatically mean cancer.
Common Causes
1. Sleeping on Your Arm
Pressure on a nerve can temporarily cause numbness and tingling.
2. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Compression of a nerve in the wrist can cause tingling or numbness, particularly in the thumb, index, middle, and part of the ring finger.
3. Neck Problems
A pinched nerve in the neck can cause symptoms that travel into the shoulder, arm, or hand.
4. Diabetes or Nerve Problems
High blood sugar over time can damage nerves and cause numbness or tingling.
5. Poor Position or Repetitive Use
Keeping your wrist or arm in one position for a long time can temporarily compress nerves.
When Should You Get Checked?
Talk with a healthcare professional if numbness is frequent, persistent, getting worse, or affecting both hands without an obvious reason.
🚨 Seek emergency medical help if sudden numbness or weakness occurs—especially on one side of the body—or happens with facial drooping, trouble speaking, severe dizziness, or a sudden severe headache.
