No More Bland Watermelons! How to Pick a Sweet One
Choosing a sweet, ripe watermelon doesn’t have to be a guessing game. Look for a few simple signs when you’re shopping.
1. Find the Yellow Field Spot
Look for a large creamy yellow or orange-yellow spot where the watermelon rested on the ground. A pale white spot may mean it was picked earlier.
2. Look for Webbing
Brown, web-like markings on the skin can be a useful sign of pollination and may occur on sweet watermelons.
3. Check the Shape
Choose a watermelon that looks evenly shaped and well-filled, without major dents or soft spots.
4. Compare the Weight
Pick up a few similar-sized watermelons. A heavier one for its size often contains more water and may be a good choice.
5. Look at the Stem
If the stem is visible, a dry, brownish stem can indicate that the fruit had time to mature. A green stem may indicate it was harvested earlier.
Quick tip: There is no single visual trick that guarantees sweetness. Use several signs together—and choose a watermelon that feels heavy, looks healthy, and has a good field spot.
