I’m 73 and Live Alone—But I Never Feel Lonely: My 4 Tips

Living alone doesn’t necessarily mean being lonely. Many older adults build fulfilling lives by staying connected, maintaining routines, and making time for activities they genuinely enjoy.

1. Keep meaningful connections

You don’t need dozens of friends. A few regular, genuine connections can make a big difference. Call a friend or family member, attend a community activity, or simply have a regular coffee with someone.

2. Give your days structure

Have things you look forward to: a morning walk, gardening, reading, cooking, exercise, or a weekly outing. A simple routine can give each day purpose.

3. Keep learning and doing

Try something new—a hobby, language, craft, recipe, book, or class. Staying mentally and physically active can make life more engaging.

4. Enjoy your own company

Being alone can be an opportunity rather than a problem. Listen to music, sit outside, care for plants, watch a favorite program, or enjoy a quiet meal without feeling that you have to fill every moment.

The key distinction: living alone and feeling lonely are not the same thing. If loneliness does appear, don’t be embarrassed to reach out—social connection remains important at every age.
