Why Daily Showers After 65 May Do More Harm Than Good

Why Daily Showers After 65 May Do More Harm Than Good

The headline is too absolute. Being over 65 doesn’t mean you should stop showering every day. However, aging skin tends to become drier and thinner, so frequent hot showers and harsh soaps can make dryness and irritation worse. The National Institute on Aging specifically recommends gentler bathing practices for older adults with dry skin. (NIA)

đźšż What can cause problems?

  • Hot water can strip natural oils from the skin and worsen dryness.
  • Long showers expose the skin to water and cleansers for longer.
  • Harsh or heavily fragranced soaps can irritate already-dry skin.
  • Scrubbing too aggressively can damage the skin barrier.
  • Frequent bathing isn’t necessarily needed if you aren’t sweating, getting dirty, or exposed to irritating substances.

The NIA notes that many older people experience dry, itchy skin partly because the skin produces less oil and sweat with age. It recommends less frequent baths/showers when dryness is a problem, milder soaps, and lukewarm rather than hot water. (NIA)

âś… A better shower routine

If daily showering works well for you, there’s no need to stop. Try:

  1. Keep showers short.
  2. Use lukewarm water, not very hot water.
  3. Use a gentle cleanser, particularly on areas that need cleaning.
  4. Avoid vigorous scrubbing.
  5. Pat—not rub—your skin dry.
  6. Apply a moisturizer afterward if your skin is dry or itchy.

⚠️ There’s another concern: falls

For older adults who are unsteady, getting into or out of a shower can be a significant safety issue. Grab bars, nonslip surfaces and a shower seat can reduce hazards. (NIA)

Bottom line: There is no medical rule saying people over 65 shouldn’t shower daily. The goal is clean skin without unnecessarily stripping or irritating it. If daily showers leave your skin dry, itchy or cracked, shortening them, lowering the temperature and using gentler products may help.
