10 Early Signs of Dementia You Should NEVER Ignore!

10 Early Signs of Dementia You Shouldn’t Ignore

Occasional forgetfulness is a normal part of aging. Dementia is different because cognitive changes begin interfering with everyday life. Having one of these signs does not automatically mean someone has dementia—many other, sometimes treatable, conditions can cause similar symptoms. (CDC)

🚩 10 warning signs

  1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life — repeatedly forgetting recently learned information or asking the same questions.
  2. Difficulty planning or solving problems — struggling with bills, recipes, or familiar routines.
  3. Trouble completing familiar tasks — difficulty driving to a familiar place or operating something previously used regularly.
  4. Confusion about time or place — losing track of dates, seasons, or where they are.
  5. Problems with visual or spatial abilities — difficulty judging distance, recognizing objects, or navigating familiar surroundings.
  6. New language problems — frequently struggling to find ordinary words or follow conversations.
  7. Frequently losing things and being unable to retrace steps — especially putting objects in unusual places.
  8. Poorer judgment — unusual financial decisions, susceptibility to scams, or neglecting personal care.
  9. Withdrawal from social activities or hobbies — particularly activities the person previously enjoyed.
  10. Unusual changes in mood or personality — increased anxiety, suspicion, irritability, depression, or other noticeable behavioral changes. (Alzheimer’s Association)

🧠 What’s normal aging?

Forgetting someone’s name occasionally but remembering it later, occasionally misplacing keys and retracing your steps, or making an occasional mistake with finances can happen with normal aging. Repeated problems that interfere with everyday independence are more concerning. (CDC)

When should you see a doctor?

If you or a family member is experiencing progressively worsening memory, thinking, language, behavior, or ability to manage everyday activities, arrange a medical evaluation. Early assessment can identify potentially reversible causes and, if dementia is present, provide earlier access to appropriate treatment and support. (CDC)

Important: Sudden confusion, speech difficulty, weakness, or other abrupt neurological changes are not typical early dementia and can indicate a stroke or another emergency—seek emergency care immediately.
