How to Make Your Jewelry Shine Again: A Simple Cleaning Method

You don’t need an expensive cleaning kit for most everyday jewelry. The safest general method is surprisingly simple: warm water + a small amount of mild dish soap + a soft brush. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) recommends this approach for most colored gemstones and many jewelry pieces.

🧼 Simple method

  1. Fill a small bowl with warm (not hot) water.
  2. Add a few drops of mild dish soap.
  3. Soak the jewelry for several minutes.
  4. Gently brush around the setting and underneath the stone with a very soft toothbrush.
  5. Rinse in a separate bowl of clean water rather than directly over the sink—loose stones can otherwise disappear down the drain.
  6. Pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

đź’Ž What NOT to use

Avoid homemade recipes involving vinegar, bleach, strong acids, abrasive powders, or harsh household cleaners. Chemicals can damage some metals and gemstones, while chlorine bleach can even damage gold alloys.

Be particularly careful with pearls, coral, turquoise, opal and other porous or delicate stones. They require gentler, material-specific care.

⚠️ One important exception

Don’t assume an ultrasonic cleaner is safe for every piece. GIA warns that ultrasonic cleaning can damage or loosen certain gemstones and treated stones.
