These visible signs may be hiding liver disease

If you mean visible signs that can sometimes point to liver disease, several are worth knowing. Importantly, liver disease—especially fatty liver disease and early cirrhosis—can have few or no obvious symptoms, so appearance alone cannot diagnose it. MMayo Clinic+1

Visible signs that may occur

• Yellow eyes or skin (jaundice): A buildup of bilirubin can cause yellowing, particularly noticeable in the whites of the eyes. It can indicate impaired liver function, although there are other causes too. MMayo Clinic+1
• Swollen abdomen: Persistent abdominal enlargement can be ascites, meaning fluid accumulation in the abdomen. In someone with cirrhosis, this can indicate more advanced disease. MMayo Clinic
• Swollen ankles, feet or legs: Fluid retention can cause edema, which is seen in cirrhosis and some other conditions. MMayo Clinic
• Spider-like red blood vessels: Small branching vessels, called spider angiomas, can appear on the skin and are associated with cirrhosis and some other conditions. MMayo Clinic
• Red palms: Unusual redness of the palms, called palmar erythema, can occur with cirrhosis. MMayo Clinic
• Easy bruising or bleeding: A damaged liver can affect proteins involved in blood clotting, making bruises or bleeding easier to develop. MMayo Clinic

Signs you might not “see” easily

When to get checked

Having one of these signs doesn’t necessarily mean you have liver disease. But persistent or unexplained changes—especially jaundice, abdominal swelling, repeated easy bruising, or leg swelling—deserve medical assessment. Liver disease is commonly evaluated with blood tests and sometimes ultrasound or other imaging, because significant disease can exist before obvious symptoms appear. MMayo Clinic
