Back pain? It’s over with these 4 stretches…Make it a habit!

If you’re referring to the viral claim “Back pain is over with these 4 stretches,” stretching can certainly help some people, but no four stretches can guarantee that back pain will disappear. The right exercises depend on the cause of the pain.

Four gentle stretches to try

1. Knee-to-chest

Lie on your back with knees bent.
Bring one knee gently toward your chest.
Hold 15–30 seconds, then switch sides.
Repeat 2–3 times.

2. Cat-cow

Start on your hands and knees.
Slowly round your back, then gently move into a comfortable arch.
Do 8–10 slow repetitions.

3. Hip-flexor stretch

Kneel with one knee down and the other foot forward.
Keep your torso upright and gently shift your hips forward.
Hold 20–30 seconds on each side.

4. Hamstring stretch

Lie on your back and raise one leg, keeping it comfortably straight.
Use your hands or a towel behind the thigh to gently assist.
Hold 20–30 seconds without forcing the stretch.
Make it a habit—but don’t push through pain

For chronic or nonspecific low-back pain, staying active and using exercise-based approaches can be helpful; prolonged bed rest generally isn’t recommended. (ninds.nih.gov

Stop if a stretch causes sharp/increasing pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness, particularly if symptoms travel down the leg.

🚨 Seek urgent medical care for back pain accompanied by new loss of bladder/bowel control, numbness around the genitals or anus, significant leg weakness, fever, or major trauma.

If your back pain has lasted more than a few weeks, keeps returning, or is getting worse, it’s worth having the cause assessed rather than relying solely on stretches.
