How does it work?
Atorvastatin reduces the liver’s production of cholesterol and increases the liver’s ability to remove LDL (“bad”) cholesterol from the blood. It can also lower triglycerides.

Why do doctors prescribe it?
The main goals are to:
Lower high LDL cholesterol
Reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke
Help protect people who already have cardiovascular disease
Reduce cardiovascular risk in some people with diabetes, kidney disease, or inherited high cholesterol.

Importantly, atorvastatin isn’t simply treating a cholesterol number. Lowering LDL can reduce the buildup and complications of cholesterol-containing plaques in the arteries, which is why statins are widely used for cardiovascular-risk reduction.

Is it safe?
Most people tolerate atorvastatin well, but side effects can occur. Possible effects include headache, dizziness, nausea, digestive problems and muscle aches. Unexplained severe muscle pain or weakness, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin/eyes should be reported promptly to a healthcare professional.
