For washable pillows
First, check the care label to make sure the pillow can be machine washed.
Wash according to the manufacturer’s instructions using your normal laundry detergent.
For stubborn yellowing, an oxygen-based laundry whitener can be used if the care label permits it.
Run an extra rinse if necessary.
Dry completely according to the label. Don’t put a damp pillow back on the bed.
For a yellowed mattress
A mattress shouldn’t be soaked. A useful bleach-free spot-treatment is:
1 cup (240 mL) of 3% hydrogen peroxide
1 cup (240 mL) of cool water
2–3 drops of clear dish soap
Test the mixture on a hidden area first because hydrogen peroxide can discolor some fabrics. Lightly dampen the yellowed area—don’t saturate the mattress—then sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda over it. Let it dry for several hours or overnight, vacuum thoroughly, and allow the mattress to air out completely before putting bedding back on.
