This is why we get cramps at night

Why do leg cramps happen at night?

Nighttime leg cramps are sudden, painful muscle contractions, usually affecting the calf or foot. They’re common, especially with increasing age, and often have no single identifiable cause. (nhs.uk

Common contributors include:

Muscle fatigue or prolonged physical activity
Standing or sitting in the same position for a long time
Dehydration
Pregnancy
Getting older
Certain medicines, including some diuretics and cholesterol-lowering medicines
Some medical conditions, including circulation problems or nerve disorders (nhs.uk

What to do when a cramp strikes

Gently stretch the affected muscle. For a calf cramp, straighten the leg and pull your toes toward your face. Standing up and putting weight on the affected leg can also help. Gentle massage may provide relief. (nhs.uk

Regular calf and hamstring stretching, staying adequately hydrated, and keeping physically active may reduce episodes.

Don’t automatically blame magnesium

Magnesium supplements are often promoted as the solution, but magnesium isn’t proven to reliably prevent ordinary nighttime leg cramps in most older adults. It’s better to identify the underlying cause before taking supplements. (cochrane.org)

See a healthcare professional if cramps are frequent, severe, disturbing your sleep, lasting more than 10 minutes, or accompanied by swelling, numbness, or weakness. (nhs.uk
