Is colonoscopy becoming non-invasive?
Partly—but the headline is misleading. A newer approach called colon capsule endoscopy lets you swallow a small camera capsule that travels through the digestive tract and takes images of the colon. It doesn’t require inserting a colonoscope and generally doesn’t require sedation.

A particularly recent 2026 multicenter study of the CC100 colon capsule found that it completely visualized the colon in about 91% of participants. However, conventional colonoscopy was completed in 100%, and the capsule’s agreement with colonoscopy for detecting colorectal lesions was about 84%.

The important catch
A capsule cannot remove a polyp or take a biopsy. If it finds a suspicious polyp or lesion, you may still need a conventional colonoscopy for removal or tissue sampling.

So, as of 2026, it would be inaccurate to say that colonoscopy has been replaced. Capsule endoscopy is a promising less-invasive alternative for selected patients, but conventional colonoscopy remains an important diagnostic and treatment procedure.
