What Is a Normal Blood Pressure at Each Age?
A common misconception is that normal blood pressure has a different target for every age. For adults, current guidelines do not give a separate “normal” number for age 60, 70, 80, etc.
According to the 2025 American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology guideline, normal adult blood pressure is below 120/80 mmHg.

Age Normal adult BP Elevated High BP
18–39 <120/80 120–129 / <80 ≥130/80
40–59 <120/80 120–129 / <80 ≥130/80
60–69 <120/80 120–129 / <80 ≥130/80
70–79 <120/80 120–129 / <80 ≥130/80
80+ <120/80 as the general normal definition 120–129 / <80 ≥130/80
The categories are based on the blood-pressure reading, not simply your age. Stage 1 hypertension is 130–139 systolic or 80–89 diastolic; stage 2 is ≥140 systolic or ≥90 diastolic.

What about people over 60 or 70?
Older adults may have different treatment decisions depending on their overall health, other diseases, medications, frailty, and risk of side effects. The current guideline’s overall treatment goal for adults is generally below 130/80, but treatment should be individualized in certain circumstances.

🚨 When is blood pressure dangerously high?
A reading over 180/120 mmHg is considered severe hypertension. If it occurs with chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness/numbness, vision changes, severe headache, or difficulty speaking, seek emergency medical care immediately.

One important point: Don’t judge your blood pressure from a single reading. Sit quietly with your back supported, feet flat on the floor, and your arm supported at heart level before measuring.

If you tell me your age and your blood-pressure reading (for example, 145/85), I can explain exactly what it means.
