Everyone’s made this mistake. What’s the normal blood pressure for each age group?

“Normal” blood pressure by age: the important correction

A common mistake is thinking that there is a different “normal” blood-pressure number for every age. For adults, current American Heart Association guidance uses the same categories across adult age groups.

Adults 18+: Normal = below 120/80 mmHg
120–129 and below 80: Elevated
130–139 or 80–89: Stage 1 hypertension
140 or higher or 90 or higher: Stage 2 hypertension
Above 180 and/or above 120: Severe hypertension; if accompanied by symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, vision changes, or difficulty speaking, it can be a hypertensive emergency.

What about people over 65 or 80?

There isn’t a rule saying that 140/90 or 150/90 is “normal because you’re old.” Older adults may have different treatment goals depending on frailty, other illnesses, medications, and overall cardiovascular risk. The 2025 AHA/ACC guideline recommends individualized treatment rather than simply accepting higher blood pressure because of age.

Also, one reading isn’t enough to diagnose hypertension. Blood pressure varies throughout the day, so repeated properly measured readings are important.

If you give me an age and a blood-pressure reading (for example, “72 years old, 148/86”), I can explain exactly what that reading means.
