From Age 65: How Often Should You Shower—and Why Over-Washing Can Harm Your Skin

There isn’t a magic number of showers that every person over 65 needs. Skin type, activity level, sweating, climate, and personal preference all matter. As we age, however, skin generally becomes thinner and drier, so long, hot showers and excessive use of soap can make dryness and itching worse.

🚿 How Often Should You Shower?

For many older adults, you don’t necessarily need a full-body shower every day if you’re not sweating heavily or getting dirty. The American Academy of Dermatology specifically notes that you may not need to bathe every day when dealing with dry skin.

On days without a full shower, regular washing of areas such as the armpits, groin, face, hands, and feet can help maintain cleanliness.

Why Can Over-Washing Cause Problems?

With age, the skin produces less protective oil and loses water more easily. Frequent long showers—especially with hot water and harsh soaps—can strip those protective oils and worsen dryness, itching, flaking, and cracking.

The Better Shower Routine

1. Keep it short: About 5–10 minutes is recommended for dry or sensitive skin.

2. Use warm, not hot, water: Hot water can increase skin dryness.

3. Choose a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser: You don’t necessarily need to soap every inch of your body. Cleanser can be focused on areas that actually need it, such as the armpits and groin.

4. Don’t scrub aggressively: Rough washcloths, brushes, and vigorous scrubbing can irritate aging skin.

5. Moisturize immediately afterward: Gently pat your skin dry while leaving it slightly damp, then apply a fragrance-free cream or ointment.

When More Frequent Showering Makes Sense

Daily—or even more frequent—showers may be appropriate if you’re sweating, exercising, working outdoors, incontinent, or otherwise getting dirty. The goal isn’t to avoid bathing; it’s to avoid unnecessarily drying or irritating the skin.
