Mini-Strokes Often Go Unnoticed: 9 Symptoms You Should Never Ignore

A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is often called a “mini-stroke,” but “warning stroke” is more accurate. It occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is temporarily interrupted. The symptoms can disappear quickly, but a TIA is an important warning of possible stroke and requires urgent medical evaluation.

9 symptoms to watch for
Sudden numbness or weakness — especially in the face, arm, or leg on one side.
Facial drooping — one side of the face may suddenly feel weak or look uneven.
Speech difficulty — slurred speech or trouble getting words out.
Difficulty understanding speech — suddenly struggling to understand what someone is saying.
Sudden vision changes — blurred, double, or lost vision in one or both eyes.
Sudden dizziness — particularly when accompanied by other neurological symptoms.
Loss of balance or coordination — sudden trouble walking or controlling movements.
Sudden confusion — an abrupt change in thinking or awareness.
A sudden, severe headache with no known cause.

The most important thing to remember

Don’t wait for symptoms to disappear. A TIA can look exactly like a stroke while it’s happening, and you cannot reliably determine at home whether symptoms are a TIA or an actual stroke. The American Stroke Association recommends emergency assessment even when symptoms resolve.

Use B.E. F.A.S.T.:

B — Balance loss
E — Eye/vision changes
F — Face drooping
A — Arm weakness
S — Speech difficulty
T — Time to call emergency services

If these symptoms are happening right now, call your local emergency number immediately and note when they began. Every minute matters with stroke.

Bottom line: A “mini-stroke” isn’t something to simply watch at home. Even brief symptoms can be a serious warning that a larger stroke may follow.
