New Method: Could Colonoscopy Become Less Invasive?
A promising alternative is colon capsule endoscopy—a small camera contained in a capsule that you swallow. As it travels naturally through the digestive tract, it takes images of the colon without inserting a traditional colonoscope. The FDA currently recognizes colon-capsule imaging systems for visualizing the colon and detecting polyps.

However, the headline “colonoscopy will no longer be an invasive examination” is misleading. Capsule endoscopy does not yet replace conventional colonoscopy for everyone. If the capsule detects a suspicious polyp or other abnormality, a traditional colonoscopy may still be necessary so doctors can biopsy or remove it. Current guidelines describe capsule examination as an option in selected circumstances rather than a universal replacement.
