Take 2 Tablespoons of This for Digestion? Here’s What the Evidence Really Says

If the “this” refers to apple cider vinegar (ACV), the internet often portrays two tablespoons as a cure-all for bloating, constipation, and poor digestion. The evidence is much less dramatic.

Research suggests vinegar may slow gastric emptying and modestly affect blood-sugar responses after meals, but there isn’t strong evidence that taking two tablespoons daily improves digestion in otherwise healthy people. A recent 2026 review also found that the strongest evidence for vinegar concerns metabolic measures—not digestive health.

If you choose to use it
Don’t drink vinegar straight. Dilute it in plenty of water or use it as part of a meal/dressing.
It can cause throat or gastrointestinal irritation, particularly at higher amounts.

Be especially cautious if you take medications that lower blood sugar or have conditions affecting stomach emptying.

Don’t use ACV as a substitute for medical treatment for persistent digestive symptoms.

Bottom line: Two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar isn’t a proven “digestion remedy.” If it makes you feel better, modest use may be reasonable for many people, but the dramatic health claims online go well beyond the evidence.
