How to get rid of inner ear crystals and reduce vertigo

If by “inner ear crystals” you mean the tiny calcium carbonate particles involved in Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, the most effective treatment is usually repositioning maneuvers that guide the crystals back to where they belong in the inner ear.

Common treatment: Epley maneuver

The Epley maneuver is often used for BPPV and can be very effective. It involves a sequence of head and body movements performed by a healthcare professional or, in some cases, at home after proper instruction.

Other maneuvers

Depending on which part of the inner ear is affected, a clinician may recommend:

  • Semont Maneuver
  • Brandt-Daroff Exercises
  • Other canalith repositioning procedures

Things that may help temporarily

  • Move slowly when changing positions.
  • Sit up for a moment before standing.
  • Use support when walking if dizziness affects balance.
  • Stay hydrated.

When to seek medical care promptly

Vertigo is not always caused by ear crystals. Seek urgent medical attention if vertigo is accompanied by:

  • Weakness or numbness on one side
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Double vision
  • Severe headache
  • Fainting
  • Chest pain
  • New hearing loss

A healthcare professional can confirm whether it’s BPPV or another condition such as Ménière’s Disease, Vestibular Neuritis, or a neurological problem.

If you’d like, describe:

  1. Your age,
  2. How long the vertigo lasts (seconds, minutes, hours, or days),
  3. Whether it happens when turning over in bed or looking up,
  4. Whether you have hearing loss or ringing in the ears,

and I can help you determine whether BPPV is a likely cause.
