Warning! If you have found this insect (silverfish) in your home, it’s a sign that you need to…see more…

That headline is misleading. Finding a Silverfish (also called a fishmoth) in your home is not automatically a sign of a serious problem, but it can point to conditions that the insects prefer.

What silverfish usually indicate

Silverfish thrive in places that are:

  • Humid or damp (such as bathrooms, basements, and laundry rooms)
  • Dark and undisturbed
  • Rich in materials containing starch or cellulose, such as paper, cardboard, books, wallpaper paste, and some fabrics

Seeing one occasionally isn’t unusual. Seeing many of them may suggest there’s excess moisture or a hidden area where they’re reproducing.

Are they dangerous?

Silverfish:

  • ❌ Do not bite people.
  • ❌ Are not known to spread diseases.
  • ❌ Are generally harmless to pets.

However, they can damage:

  • Books and important papers
  • Wallpaper
  • Clothing made of natural fibers
  • Stored dry goods in some cases

What you should do

If you find silverfish:

  1. Reduce humidity by fixing leaks, improving ventilation, or using a dehumidifier if needed.
  2. Store paper and fabrics in dry, sealed containers when possible.
  3. Vacuum regularly, especially along baseboards, closets, and under furniture.
  4. Seal cracks and gaps where they may hide or enter.
  5. If you notice a large or persistent infestation, consider contacting a pest control professional.

When to be concerned

Finding a single silverfish is usually not a cause for alarm. If you repeatedly see several, especially during the day, it’s worth checking for moisture problems or hidden water leaks, as those conditions can also encourage mold growth and other pests.

So, the real takeaway isn’t “panic”—it’s inspect your home for excess moisture and improve housekeeping in areas where silverfish are likely to hide.
