If your goal is to make the toilet bowl, rim, and flush system look clean and work well, here’s a straightforward method.
What you’ll need
- White vinegar
- Baking soda (optional)
- Toilet brush
- Rubber gloves
- Microfiber cloth
- An old toothbrush or small cleaning brush
Clean the toilet bowl
- Pour about 1 cup of white vinegar into the bowl.
- Let it sit for 15–30 minutes.
- Sprinkle in ½ cup of baking soda if there are stubborn stains.
- Scrub thoroughly with a toilet brush, paying extra attention under the rim.
- Flush.
Clean under the rim
Mineral deposits often build up where the water flows out.
- Spray or pour vinegar under the rim.
- Let it sit for 15–30 minutes.
- Scrub with a small brush or old toothbrush.
Freshen the flush tank (if needed)
If you have hard water or mineral buildup:
- Turn off the water supply.
- Flush to empty most of the tank.
- Pour in enough white vinegar to cover mineral deposits.
- Let it sit for 1–2 hours (or longer for heavy buildup).
- Gently scrub and turn the water back on.
Avoid putting bleach and vinegar together—they can produce toxic chlorine gas.
Clean the outside
Wipe the handle, lid, seat, base, and tank with warm, soapy water or a bathroom disinfectant. Dry with a clean microfiber cloth for a polished finish.
Cleaning the toilet every week helps prevent stains, limescale, and odors, making deep cleaning much easier.
