Waking up with dry mouth? Here’s what your body might be telling you

Waking up with a dry mouth is common and is usually not a sign of a serious illness, but it can point to an underlying issue that’s worth addressing if it happens often.

Some possible causes include:

  1. Sleeping with your mouth open
    • Often due to nasal congestion, allergies, or habitual mouth breathing.
  2. Dehydration
    • Not drinking enough fluids, sweating heavily, or consuming alcohol can reduce saliva production.
  3. Medications
    • Many medicines can cause dry mouth, including some antihistamines, antidepressants, blood pressure medications, and drugs used to treat anxiety or overactive bladder.
  4. Snoring or sleep apnea
    • These conditions can lead to mouth breathing during sleep and morning dryness.
  5. Diabetes
    • High blood sugar can contribute to dry mouth, especially if accompanied by increased thirst and frequent urination.
  6. Autoimmune conditions
    • Disorders such as Sjögren’s syndrome can reduce saliva production and cause persistent dry mouth and dry eyes.
  7. Smoking or vaping
    • Tobacco and nicotine products can worsen dry mouth.

What you can do

  • Drink enough water throughout the day.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine if they seem to make it worse.
  • Treat nasal congestion if it’s causing mouth breathing.
  • Consider using a humidifier if your bedroom air is very dry.
  • Maintain good oral hygiene, since dry mouth increases the risk of cavities.

When to see a healthcare professional

Arrange an evaluation if:

  • Dry mouth persists for several weeks.
  • You have difficulty swallowing or speaking.
  • You develop frequent cavities, mouth sores, or oral infections.
  • You also have symptoms such as loud snoring, pauses in breathing during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, or unexplained thirst and frequent urination.

Persistent dry mouth is often treatable, but identifying the underlying cause is the key to choosing the right treatment.
