A month before a heart attack, your body will warn you – here are 6 signs

A heart attack can sometimes be preceded by warning symptoms, but it is important to know that some people have no warning signs at all, and symptoms can occur suddenly. There is no reliable way to predict a heart attack exactly one month in advance.

Possible warning signs that should be taken seriously include:

1. Unusual chest discomfort

  • Pressure, squeezing, heaviness, tightness, or burning in the chest
  • It may come and go, especially with activity

2. Shortness of breath

  • Trouble breathing with normal activities or at rest can be a warning sign, especially if it is new.

3. Unusual fatigue

  • Feeling extremely tired without a clear reason can occur before heart problems, particularly in some women and older adults.

4. Pain or discomfort spreading to other areas

  • Pain may spread to the:
    • Arm (especially the left arm)
    • Shoulder
    • Back
    • Neck
    • Jaw
    • Upper stomach

5. Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting

  • These may occur when the heart is not pumping effectively.

6. Sweating, nausea, or a feeling of anxiety or unease

  • Cold sweats, nausea, or a sudden feeling that something is wrong can accompany heart problems.

Seek emergency help immediately if you have:

  • Chest pressure or pain lasting more than a few minutes
  • Shortness of breath with chest discomfort
  • Fainting
  • Severe weakness or sudden symptoms that feel unusual

Risk can be reduced by managing:

  • Blood pressure
  • Cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Physical activity
  • Diet

If you are asking because you or someone you know has new symptoms, tell me the person’s age, symptoms, and when they started so I can help you judge how urgent it may be.
