A Month Before a Stroke, Your Body Warns You: 10 Signs Not to Ignore

A Month Before a Stroke: Warning Signs Your Body May Show

The idea that the body gives a predictable “one month warning” before a stroke is not medically established. Some people do experience warning signs before a stroke—especially a transient ischemic attack (TIA), sometimes called a “mini-stroke”—but these signs can happen suddenly and may occur minutes, hours, or days before a stroke rather than following a set timeline.

Possible warning signs that should not be ignored

  1. Sudden weakness or numbness
    • Especially on one side of the face, arm, or leg.
  2. Sudden trouble speaking or understanding speech
    • Slurred speech, confusion, or difficulty finding words.
  3. Sudden vision changes
    • Loss of vision, double vision, or blurred vision.
  4. Sudden dizziness or loss of balance
    • Trouble walking, coordination problems, or unusual clumsiness.
  5. A sudden severe headache
    • Especially a “worst headache ever” or one that comes without a clear cause.
  6. Face drooping
    • One side of the face may feel weak or appear uneven when smiling.
  7. Difficulty swallowing
    • New swallowing problems can be a warning sign.
  8. Brief episodes of neurological symptoms that go away
    • A TIA can cause stroke-like symptoms that resolve, but it is still an emergency warning.
  9. New confusion or unusual behavior changes
    • Sudden mental changes can signal a brain problem.
  10. Unexplained weakness, fatigue, or reduced function
  • These are less specific but should be evaluated if new or persistent.

Remember FAST

  • F — Face: Is one side drooping?
  • A — Arms: Is one arm weak or numb?
  • S — Speech: Is speech strange or difficult?
  • T — Time: Call emergency services immediately.

A stroke can occur without any warning, so the most effective prevention is controlling risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, inactivity, and certain heart conditions.

If you or someone nearby is having sudden stroke-like symptoms right now, seek emergency medical help immediately rather than waiting to see if they improve.
