🧘 A Protruding Lower Belly and Stiff Lower Back: Could the Psoas Be Involved?
The psoas muscles are deep muscles that run from the lower spine through the pelvis to the upper thigh. They help stabilize the lower back and move the hips. Irritation or injury can cause lower-back stiffness, hip or groin pain, and discomfort when standing upright.
However, the viral claim that a protruding lower belly is caused by a “tight psoas” isn’t well established. A belly that protrudes can have many explanations, including body-fat distribution, bloating, abdominal-muscle weakness, posture, or conditions such as diastasis recti.
What may help
If your symptoms are genuinely related to the psoas or other muscles:
- 🚶 Stay gently active rather than spending long periods in bed.
- 🧘 Gentle hip-flexor/psoas stretching may help some people.
- 💪 Gradually build core and hip strength.
- 🪑 Avoid remaining in one sitting or standing position for prolonged periods.
A physical therapist can determine whether the psoas is actually contributing to your symptoms rather than assuming it is the cause.
🚨 Don’t blame everything on the psoas
Get medical evaluation for persistent or worsening back pain. Immediate care is appropriate for back pain accompanied by new bowel/bladder problems, significant leg weakness or numbness, fever, or severe abdominal pain.
