All you need is a dishwasher tablet! The oven will be like new again

Using a dishwasher tablet to clean an oven is a popular cleaning hack, and it can work on some greasy surfaces — but it needs to be done carefully.

Why it can work

Dishwasher tablets contain ingredients that are designed to break down:

  • Grease and baked-on food residue
  • Oils
  • Starches and proteins from food

These cleaning agents can help loosen grime inside an oven.

How people use the method

  1. Put on rubber gloves.
  2. Place a dishwasher tablet in a bowl or tray.
  3. Pour over hot water and let it soften/dissolve.
  4. Use the solution with a sponge or cloth to wipe greasy oven surfaces.
  5. Wipe again with clean water to remove residue.

For very stubborn areas, some people place a dishwasher tablet in a heatproof dish with hot water inside a warm oven to create steam — but avoid heating chemical cleaners unless the product instructions specifically allow it.

Important cautions

⚠️ Do not use dishwasher tablets on every oven part.

  • Avoid using them on aluminium surfaces, exposed heating elements, or delicate coatings unless the manufacturer says it is safe.
  • Do not leave strong detergent residue behind—wipe thoroughly before using the oven again.
  • Never mix dishwasher detergent with bleach or other cleaning chemicals.

Safer alternatives

For many ovens, a paste of baking soda and water left for several hours can help loosen baked-on grease, followed by wiping with vinegar or clean water.

A dishwasher tablet can be a useful cleaning trick, but it is not a magic “make it new” solution — heavily burnt-on carbon may still need a dedicated oven cleaner or mechanical scrubbing.
