Aneurysm: Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore…..

An aneurysm is a weakened area in the wall of a blood vessel that can bulge and, in some cases, rupture. Many aneurysms cause no symptoms until they become large or rupture, which is why certain warning signs should be taken seriously.

Signs of an aneurysm that should not be ignored

Possible brain (cerebral) aneurysm warning signs:

  • A sudden, severe “worst headache of your life”
  • Headache with nausea, vomiting, stiff neck, or sensitivity to light
  • Sudden confusion, fainting, seizure, or loss of consciousness
  • Trouble speaking, weakness, numbness, or drooping on one side of the body
  • Sudden vision changes or eye pain

Possible abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) warning signs:

  • Deep, persistent pain in the abdomen or side
  • A feeling of a strong pulse or “heartbeat” in the belly
  • Sudden severe abdominal or back pain (especially if it is new or intense)
  • Dizziness, fainting, rapid heartbeat, or signs of shock (possible rupture)

Possible chest (thoracic) aneurysm symptoms:

  • Chest or upper back pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Hoarseness or coughing from pressure on nearby structures

When to seek emergency help

Call emergency services immediately for:

  • Sudden severe headache
  • Sudden neurological symptoms (face drooping, weakness, speech trouble)
  • Sudden severe chest, abdominal, or back pain
  • Fainting or collapse

Who may be at higher risk?

Risk increases with factors such as:

  • High blood pressure
  • Smoking
  • Older age
  • Family history of aneurysm
  • Certain inherited connective tissue disorders
  • High cholesterol or vascular disease
