Aneurysm: Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

An aneurysm is a weakened area in a blood vessel wall that can bulge or enlarge. Many aneurysms cause no symptoms and are found incidentally, but some can become dangerous if they grow or rupture.

Possible Warning Signs

Symptoms depend on where the aneurysm is located:

Brain aneurysm (especially if leaking or rupturing):

  • Sudden, severe headache (“worst headache of your life”)
  • Neck stiffness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Confusion, fainting, or seizures
  • Weakness, numbness, trouble speaking, or vision changes

Aortic aneurysm (main artery of the body):

  • Sudden, severe chest, back, or abdominal pain
  • A feeling of tearing or ripping pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness or fainting

Abdominal aortic aneurysm may sometimes cause:

  • Deep, persistent abdominal or back pain
  • A pulsing feeling in the abdomen

Seek Emergency Help Immediately If You Have:

  • A sudden, intense headache unlike any previous headache
  • Sudden chest, back, or abdominal pain with weakness, fainting, or difficulty breathing
  • Signs of stroke (face drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty
