If you start to suffocate and you are alone: save your life in a single second

If you are alone and choking (unable to breathe because food or an object is blocking your airway), quick action matters.

If you can still cough or make sounds:

  • Cough forcefully. A strong cough is often the best way to clear the blockage.
  • Do not put your fingers in your throat unless you can clearly see and remove the object.

If you cannot breathe, speak, or cough effectively:

  1. Call emergency services if you can (use speaker mode if possible).
  2. Perform self-abdominal thrusts (self-Heimlich maneuver):
    • Make a fist and place it just above your belly button.
    • Hold your fist with your other hand.
    • Pull inward and upward sharply.
    • Repeat until the object comes out.
  3. If that does not work:
    • Lean your upper abdomen against a firm object with an edge (such as the back of a sturdy chair or countertop).
    • Press inward and upward repeatedly to create thrusts.

If you become unconscious:

Emergency responders are needed. If someone is nearby, they should call for help and begin appropriate first aid.

Important: This applies to choking from a blocked airway. If you mean a different kind of “suffocating” feeling (such as asthma, panic, heart problems, or breathing difficulty), the response is different and may require urgent medical attention.
