At over 70 years old, if you continue to do these 8 things, you will age better than most could hope.

That headline is motivational, but there’s no guaranteed list of “8 things” that ensures someone will age better than others. However, research does support several habits that are associated with healthier aging:

  1. Stay physically active. Aim for regular aerobic activity, strength training, balance exercises, and flexibility work, as appropriate for your health.
  2. Eat a balanced diet. Emphasize vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, lean proteins, healthy fats, and adequate protein to help maintain muscle.
  3. Keep your mind engaged. Reading, learning new skills, puzzles, hobbies, and social interaction can help maintain cognitive function.
  4. Maintain social connections. Spending time with family, friends, or community groups is linked to better physical and mental health.
  5. Get enough sleep. Most older adults benefit from about 7–8 hours of quality sleep each night.
  6. Keep up with preventive healthcare. Attend recommended checkups, vaccinations, screenings, and take medications as prescribed.
  7. Reduce fall risk. Stay active to improve strength and balance, wear appropriate footwear, and make your home safer if needed.
  8. Avoid smoking and limit alcohol. Not smoking and drinking alcohol in moderation (or not at all) are associated with better long-term health.

These habits don’t guarantee perfect health, but they are consistently linked with better mobility, independence, and quality of life as people age. Even starting or improving one of these habits later in life can provide meaningful benefits.
