Be your own dentist! Here are some tips for removing tartar buildup at home.

“Be Your Own Dentist”: Can You Remove Tartar at Home?

Be careful with this advice. Plaque can be removed at home, but hardened tartar (calculus) generally cannot. Once plaque mineralizes and bonds to the tooth, professional scaling is the safe way to remove it.

What you can safely do at home
Brush twice daily for about 2 minutes with fluoride toothpaste.
Clean between your teeth every day with floss or interdental brushes.
A water flosser can help remove plaque, but it won’t remove established tartar.
Tartar-control toothpaste may help slow new buildup, but it won’t dissolve existing calculus.

What NOT to do

Don’t try to scrape tartar off with needles, knives, nail tools, or DIY metal dental scalers. You can injure your gums or scratch the tooth surface, and deposits below the gumline require professional treatment.

Also be skeptical of claims that vinegar, lemon juice, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, or oil pulling can dissolve tartar. These approaches don’t remove hardened calculus, and acidic or abrasive substances can damage teeth if misused.

When to see a dentist

If you have hard yellow/brown deposits, bleeding or swollen gums, persistent bad breath, gum recession, or loose teeth, arrange a dental examination and cleaning. Gum disease sometimes requires cleaning below the gumline rather than simple polishing.

Bottom line: You can be your own plaque-prevention expert, but don’t be your own tartar scraper. Brush, clean between your teeth, and let a dental professional remove established calculus safely.
