Easy Soft & Fluffy Butter Naan Recipe

This homemade butter naan is soft, slightly chewy, and perfect with curries, grilled meats, or dips.

Ingredients (makes about 8 naan)

For the dough

  • 3 cups (375 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¾ cup (180 g) plain yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter or oil
  • ¾–1 cup warm water (as needed)

For finishing

  • 3–4 tablespoons melted butter
  • Chopped cilantro (optional)
  • Minced garlic (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the dough
    • Mix flour, salt, sugar, baking powder, and baking soda in a bowl.
    • Add yogurt and melted butter.
    • Slowly add warm water and knead until you get a soft, slightly sticky dough.
  2. Knead and rest
    • Knead for about 5–8 minutes until smooth.
    • Cover and let it rest for 1–2 hours (this helps make the naan softer).
  3. Shape the naan
    • Divide dough into 8 portions.
    • Roll each piece into a thin oval or teardrop shape.
    • Sprinkle with garlic or cilantro if desired.
  4. Cook
    • Heat a heavy skillet or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat.
    • Place naan on the hot pan.
    • Cook until bubbles form and the bottom has golden spots.
    • Flip and cook the other side.
  5. Add butter
    • Brush hot naan generously with melted butter.
    • Serve warm.
