Easy Southern Hoecakes Recipe
Hoecakes are a simple Southern cornmeal pancake, crispy on the outside and tender inside. They’re great with butter, honey, syrup, or alongside savory dishes.
Ingredients
- 1 cup cornmeal (fine or medium grind)
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar (optional)
- 1 cup buttermilk (add a little more if needed)
- 1 large egg
- 2 tablespoons melted butter or oil
- Oil or bacon grease for frying
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
- Add buttermilk, egg, and melted butter. Stir until you have a thick batter (similar to pancake batter).
- Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and lightly grease it.
- Drop spoonfuls of batter onto the hot skillet and flatten slightly.
- Cook for about 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy.
- Serve warm with butter, honey, maple syrup, or your favorite toppings.
Tip: For extra crispy edges and traditional flavor, cook them in a cast-iron skillet with a little bacon grease.
