From Age 65: How Often Should You Shower — and Why Over-Washing Can Harm Your Health see the frist comment

Washing Can Affect Your Health

As people get older, skin changes. It often becomes thinner, drier, and more sensitive, which means the bathing habits that worked when you were younger may not always be ideal later in life.

There is no single “correct” number of showers for everyone over 65. The best routine depends on factors such as activity level, sweating, skin condition, climate, and personal comfort.

How often should older adults shower?

For many older adults, showering a few times per week may be enough if daily washing is not needed for cleanliness or medical reasons.

Daily bathing may still be appropriate for people who:

  • Sweat heavily
  • Work in dirty environments
  • Exercise frequently
  • Have certain skin conditions requiring specific care
  • Need hygiene support due to incontinence

Why over-washing can be a problem

1. Dry, irritated skin

Frequent hot showers and strong soaps can remove natural oils that protect the skin, leading to:

  • Dryness
  • Flaking
  • Itching
  • Cracking

2. Weakened skin barrier

The skin barrier helps keep moisture in and protects against irritants and germs. Excessive washing may disrupt this protective layer.

3. Increased itching

Older adults commonly experience dry skin, and frequent bathing—especially with hot water—can make itching worse.

4. More sensitivity to products

Fragranced soaps, harsh cleansers, and antibacterial products may irritate aging skin
