How to Clean Dirty Bed Pillows and Leave Them White and Fresh 🛏️✨
Dirty pillows can accumulate sweat, skin oils, dust, and other debris. The safest cleaning method depends on the type of pillow and its care label.
For washable pillows
Check the care label first. Don’t machine-wash memory-foam or latex pillows unless the manufacturer specifically permits it.
Remove the pillowcase and protector. Wash these separately.
Pre-treat yellow or greasy areas. Apply a small amount of liquid laundry detergent to the stains and gently work it in.
Wash two pillows together when possible to keep your washing machine balanced.
Use mild detergent and the warmest water allowed by the care instructions.
For white washable pillows, use oxygen bleach according to its label if the care instructions permit it. This can help with yellowing without relying on chlorine bleach.
Run an extra rinse to remove detergent residue.
Dry completely. Tumble-dry according to the label, periodically fluffing the pillows.
Check the center carefully. A pillow that feels dry on the outside may still be damp inside. Don’t put it back on the bed until it’s completely dry.
For a fresh smell 🌿
You don’t need a strong fragrance. Thorough washing, complete drying, and good ventilation are usually enough to make pillows smell fresh. Avoid spraying perfumes, essential oils, or cleaning products directly onto bedding that touches your face.
Tip: If a pillow has persistent mold, a strong musty odor, or badly deteriorated filling, replacing it may be more hygienic than repeatedly washing it.
