Geraniums (often called pelargoniums) can produce lots of flowers when they get the right balance of water, light, nutrients, and pruning. The idea that there is one special watering trick that guarantees nonstop blooms is a bit exaggerated, but proper watering makes a big difference.
How to water geraniums for healthier growth and more flowers
🌿 1. Water deeply, then let the soil dry slightly
- Water until it drains from the bottom of the pot.
- Wait until the top 2–3 cm (about 1 inch) of soil feels dry before watering again.
- Avoid keeping the soil constantly wet, as geranium roots can rot.
🌿 2. Water the soil, not the leaves
- Pour water near the base of the plant.
- Wet leaves and flowers can encourage fungal problems.
🌿 3. Adjust for weather
- Hot, sunny conditions: geraniums may need more frequent watering.
- Cool or rainy conditions: reduce watering.
🌿 4. Feed during the growing season
- A balanced flowering fertilizer every few weeks can support more blooms.
- Avoid too much nitrogen, which can create lots of leaves but fewer flowers.
🌿 5. Remove old flowers
- “Deadheading” (pinching off faded blooms) encourages the plant to produce more flowers.
🌿 6. Give plenty of sunlight
- Most geraniums flower best with several hours of direct sun each day.
A good rule: slightly dry is better than constantly soggy for geraniums. The healthiest plants usually come from consistent care rather than a single watering trick.
