How to Remove White Patina (Cloudy Film) From Glasses and Make Them Shine Again
A white, cloudy coating on drinking glasses is usually caused by hard water mineral deposits (calcium and limescale) or, in some cases, glass etching from repeated dishwasher use. The cleaning method depends on the cause.
Method 1: Vinegar Soak (for mineral deposits)
You need:
- White vinegar
- Warm water
- Soft cloth or sponge
Steps:
- Fill a bowl with equal parts warm water and white vinegar.
- Soak the cloudy glasses for 15–30 minutes.
- Gently wipe them with a soft sponge.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- Dry with a microfiber cloth to prevent new spots.
Why it works:
The acidity of vinegar helps dissolve mineral buildup from hard water.
Method 2: Baking Soda Polish (for stubborn spots)
You need:
- Baking soda
- A little water
Steps:
- Mix baking soda with a small amount of water to make a paste.
- Apply gently to the cloudy areas.
- Rub lightly with a soft cloth.
- Rinse and dry.
Avoid aggressive scrubbing, which can scratch glass.
Method 3: Dishwasher Prevention Trick
To reduce future buildup:
- Use a rinse aid if your dishwasher allows it.
- Do not overload the dishwasher.
- Use the correct detergent amount.
- Clean the dishwasher filter regularly.
- Consider a water softener if your area has very hard water
