High blood pressure, high cholesterol: Avoid these 3 habits in the morning

If you have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, your morning routine can influence your heart health. While there is no single “dangerous” morning habit for everyone, these three habits may work against your goals:

1. Skipping medication or taking it inconsistently

  • Blood pressure and cholesterol medicines work best when taken as prescribed.
  • Missing doses or changing the timing without medical advice can allow blood pressure or cholesterol levels to rise.

2. Starting the day with a high-salt breakfast

  • Foods like processed meats, salty breads, packaged foods, and heavily salted meals can increase sodium intake.
  • Too much sodium can contribute to higher blood pressure, especially in salt-sensitive people.

3. Having a sedentary start to the day

  • Sitting for long periods after waking and avoiding regular activity can negatively affect blood pressure, cholesterol levels, weight, and blood vessel health.
  • Even a short walk or light movement in the morning can be beneficial.

Other morning habits that may help:

  • Drink water after waking, especially if you are dehydrated.
  • Choose a heart-friendly breakfast (for example: oats, fruit, nuts, yogurt, eggs, or whole grains depending on your diet needs).
  • Check your blood pressure if your clinician has recommended home monitoring.
  • Avoid smoking, which can immediately raise blood pressure and strain the cardiovascular system.

If you have high blood pressure plus high cholesterol, the most effective approach is usually a combination of prescribed treatment, a heart-healthy diet, regular activity, good sleep, and avoiding tobacco.
