Yes. If you have high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol, the “3 morning habits” idea has some truth behind it, but it shouldn’t be treated as a magic rule. What matters is your overall daily pattern.
3 morning habits worth avoiding
1. Starting the day with a very salty breakfast 🧂
Foods such as processed meats, salty breads, packaged foods and heavily salted breakfast dishes can push up sodium intake. Reducing sodium is one of the established ways to help control blood pressure. The American Heart Association recommends no more than 2,300 mg sodium/day, with an ideal limit of 1,500 mg for most adults with high blood pressure.
2. Eating a breakfast high in saturated fat 🧈
Large amounts of butter, fatty meat, full-fat dairy and some fried foods can increase LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats—such as those from nuts, seeds, fish and liquid plant oils—is recommended for heart health.
3. Having excessive caffeine—especially if your BP is uncontrolled ☕
Caffeine can temporarily raise blood pressure and heart rate. However, this doesn’t mean everyone needs to stop coffee. A 2026 AHA scientific statement says up to about 400 mg caffeine/day is generally safe for most adults, while higher amounts, particularly from energy drinks, can be problematic for some people.
A better morning routine
Try water + a fiber-rich breakfast + fruit/vegetables + a protein source, with little added salt and limited saturated fat. Examples include oats with fruit and nuts, or whole-grain roti with beans/vegetables and a modest amount of low-fat protein.
