How to get rid of inner ear crystals and reduce vertigo

If by “inner ear crystals” you mean the tiny calcium carbonate particles involved in Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, the goal is usually not to dissolve or remove them, but to move them back to the part of the inner ear where they belong.

The most common treatment is a series of head and body movements called Epley Maneuver. This can often reduce or eliminate vertigo caused by BPPV.

Typical symptoms of BPPV include:

  • Brief episodes of spinning dizziness triggered by changes in head position
  • Vertigo when rolling over in bed
  • Dizziness when looking up or bending down
  • Nausea during episodes

A healthcare professional can determine which ear and which canal is affected and perform or teach the appropriate repositioning maneuver. Different forms of BPPV may require different maneuvers.

Seek medical attention promptly if dizziness is accompanied by:

  • Weakness or numbness
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Double vision
  • Severe headache
  • Fainting
  • New hearing loss

These symptoms can indicate conditions other than BPPV and may require urgent evaluation.

If you’d like, I can explain how the Epley maneuver is performed, but it’s best to first confirm that your symptoms are consistent with BPPV.
