How to get rid of inner ear crystals and reduce vertigo

“Inner ear crystals” refers to a common cause of vertigo called Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. It happens when tiny calcium particles (otoconia) move into the wrong part of the inner ear and confuse your balance system. The good news: it’s often very treatable without medication.

Best way to fix it: repositioning maneuvers

1. Epley maneuver

This is the most commonly used treatment for BPPV affecting the back canal. It uses a sequence of head and body positions to guide the crystals back where they belong. Many people feel relief within 1–2 sessions.

2. Semont maneuver

A faster movement-based technique sometimes used as an alternative to Epley, especially if symptoms are stubborn.

3. Brandt-Daroff exercises

These are repeated home exercises that help your brain adapt and gradually reduce dizziness over time.

4. Barbecue roll maneuver

Used when the crystals affect the horizontal canal (a different form of BPPV).

What you can do at home (safe habits)

  • Move slowly when turning in bed or standing up.
  • Sleep slightly elevated for a few nights if symptoms are active.
  • Avoid sudden head tilts or looking up quickly.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Do prescribed exercises consistently if diagnosed.

When you should NOT self-treat

See a doctor first if:

  • This is your first episode of vertigo
  • You have hearing loss or ringing in one ear
  • You have severe imbalance or repeated falls
  • Symptoms last hours continuously (BPPV usually lasts seconds to minutes)

Emergency warning signs (seek urgent care)

  • Weakness or numbness on one side of the body
  • Slurred speech
  • Severe new headache
  • Double vision
  • Trouble walking
