How to Get Rid of Milia: Those Annoying Fat Cysts

The phrase “fat cysts” isn’t quite accurate. Milia are tiny, white or yellowish bumps made of keratin (a skin protein), not fat. They commonly appear around the eyes, cheeks, nose, and forehead.

Here are safe and effective ways to manage them:

What you can do at home

  • Don’t squeeze or pick them. Unlike pimples, milia don’t have an opening to the skin, so squeezing them usually doesn’t work and can cause scarring or infection.
  • Cleanse gently. Wash your face with a mild cleanser twice a day.
  • Exfoliate carefully. A gentle chemical exfoliant containing an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) or beta hydroxy acid (BHA) may help prevent new milia from forming. Avoid over-exfoliating, especially around the eyes.
  • Consider a retinoid. An over-the-counter retinoid (where appropriate) or a prescription retinoid from a dermatologist can help increase skin cell turnover and reduce new milia. Retinoids are not suitable for everyone, including during pregnancy.

Professional treatment

If milia are persistent or bothersome, a dermatologist can remove them safely using:

  • A sterile needle or tiny blade to create an opening, followed by gentle extraction.
  • In some cases, other treatments such as electrocautery or laser therapy may be appropriate.

These procedures are quick and are generally performed in the office.

Prevention

  • Use non-comedogenic skincare products if you’re prone to milia.
  • Protect your skin from excessive sun exposure with sunscreen and other sun-protective measures.
  • Avoid heavy creams around the eyes if they seem to contribute to recurring milia.

When to seek medical advice

See a healthcare professional if:

  • The bumps are widespread or rapidly increasing.
  • They become painful, red, or swollen.
  • You’re unsure whether the bumps are milia or another skin condition.

Milia are harmless and often resolve on their own—especially in infants—but adults may need professional treatment if they don’t go away or if they’re cosmetically bothersome.
