How to Remove Scratches From Glasses and Restore Their Shine

If you mean eyeglasses, there is an important catch: most lens scratches cannot actually be removed at home. DIY abrasives can make the lenses look cloudy and can damage anti-reflective or protective coatings.

Simple and Safe Method

You need:

  • Lukewarm water
  • A drop of mild dish soap
  • Clean microfiber cloth

Steps

  1. Rinse the lenses under lukewarm water to remove dust and grit.
  2. Put one small drop of mild dish soap on each lens.
  3. Gently clean both sides with clean fingers.
  4. Rinse thoroughly.
  5. Dry with a clean microfiber lens cloth.

This removes grease and fine dirt and can make lenses look much clearer, but it will not remove genuine scratches.

Avoid These “Scratch Removers”

Don’t use toothpaste, baking soda, glass cleaner, car polish, or abrasive powders. They may temporarily change how scratches look, but they can permanently damage the lens surface or coating.

If the Scratches Remain

For significant scratches, the safest solution is to have an optician inspect the lenses. Depending on the severity, replacing the lenses may be the only reliable way to restore a like-new appearance.
