How to Remove Set-In Grease Stains From Laundry
Set-in grease stains can be stubborn, but you can often improve or remove them with a few simple steps.
What You Need
- Dishwashing liquid
- Liquid laundry detergent
- Soft toothbrush or clean cloth
- Warm water
- Baking soda (optional)
Step 1: Check the Care Label
Before treating the stain, check the clothing label. If the item is dry-clean-only, take it to a professional cleaner instead.
Step 2: Apply Dish Soap
Put a small amount of grease-cutting dishwashing liquid directly onto the dry stain. Gently work it into the fabric with your fingers or a soft toothbrush.
Step 3: Let It Sit
Leave the dish soap on the stain for about 15–30 minutes. For an older stain, you may need to repeat the treatment.
Step 4: Rinse
Rinse the area with the warmest water that is safe for the fabric.
Step 5: Wash Normally
Apply your regular liquid laundry detergent and wash according to the garment’s care label.
Step 6: Check Before Drying
Do not put the clothing in the dryer until the grease stain is gone. Heat can make the remaining stain even harder to remove.
If you can still see the stain after washing, repeat the dish-soap treatment and wash again.
For Especially Stubborn Stains
Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda over the dish soap and gently work it into the stain. Let it sit for 15–30 minutes before rinsing and washing.
